Grievance Committee

The Grievance Committee is not a Standing Committee but is a deliberative committee to be assembled and co-chaired on a regular basis by the Vice Presidents of Membership and Education.

The Grievance Committee consists of the Vice President of Membership, the Vice President of Education, two representatives from the Board of Directors, at least two representatives from the Membership Committee, at least two representatives from the Education Committee, and at least two representatives from the general membership of the MSU SHC.  The members, whenever possible, remain active for the entire contract period (one year) in order to ensure the greatest amount of continuity and stability within the body

The main purposes and duties of the Grievance Committee are:

  • Having regularly scheduled bi-weekly meetings;
  • Acting as an on-call response team to Membership crises such as discrimination and sexual harassment, supporting the victim and encouraging them to take a proper next step, which may be submitting a written complaint to the MSC or the Executive Director.  The Grievance Committee will:
    • Publish a list of their phone numbers in each house for use in member-related emergency situations; and
    • Recruit houses to provide safe-space to all members who request it;
  • Handling dispute and conflict resolution as outlined in 1.17 whenever a complaint is issued;
  • Ensuring that all cases are acted up on in a timely fashion and following up on recently closed cases;
  • Promoting a tolerant co-operative atmosphere for all members; and
  • Updating the meeting procedure of the Grievance Committee on a regular basis.
